Summer Camp Staff Information and Application

Hiring Policies
For those applying to be counselors in Little Camp, OHDC, and Middle School Camp as well as Lifeguards, Grooms, and Directors the following criteria apply.

Eligibility: You must be 18 years old to be a counselor or lifeguard, or 17 years old to be a groom at Oak Hill Day Camp and legally able to work in the United States. You must be 21 to be a Director or Middle School Counselor. Preference is given to previous staff members who have been invited back after an evaluation of last season’s performance. Working in the Recreation Department and Summer Camps requires physical stamina, athletic ability and creativity. Staff should be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds, as well as be proficient in swimming.

Young people who have completed two seasons in our Counselor in Training program effectively may be given preference as a high school junior or senior to work as a Junior Counselor. All applicants 18 years old and older must submit to a mandatory background check. Staff must also agree to and sign all policies and procedures.

Applications: We begin taking applications February 1st. These are available online, in the Oak Hill Day Camp office and can be mailed, faxed or emailed. All applicants new or returning must complete an application each year. The interview process consists of one interview with an Assistant Director followed by a final interview with the Camp Director. If hired, your position is not secure until all paperwork is completed and submitted to the Recreation Office.

Background Checks: Each member of the Oak Hill Day Camp staff, 18 years and older, will be required to undergo a background check each season. All staff must supply three references and two written recommendations each season, as well as the appropriate forms of identification as specified on the I-9 form. This includes all year round recreation personnel and FPC personnel who work in and/or around the recreation areas.

Positions, Qualifications and Responsibilities:

ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR –
This includes OHDC, Little Camp, and Special Needs Coordinator. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 21 years of age.
Minimum of 3 years at Oak Hill Day Camp.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.
Experience in leading all age groups.
Strong organization skills.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the assignment of groups, staff, and day to day operations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assigning counselors to groups.
Develop group lists.
Replace absent counselors.
Check daily attendance of campers.
Make sure all ratios are being met.
Oversee implementation of all safety policies and procedures.
Coordinate with Area Directors and Director.

SPECIAL NEEDS STAFF REQUIREMENTS:

While we are not primarily a special needs camp, we do serve a very small number of campers with special needs or disabilities. We have a Special Needs Liaison who is employed by Vanderbilt University who meets with the families and children before camp as well as provides a plan for the camp staff. We also hire teachers employed with special needs in the school systems and/or students studying special education.

Middle School Camp Director

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 21 years of age.
Minimum of 3 years at Oak Hill Day Camp.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.
Experience in leading all age groups.
Strong organization skills.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the assignment of groups, staff, and day to day operations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan and coordinate off campus trips.
Check daily attendance of campers.
Make sure all ratios are being met.
Oversee implementation of all safety policies and procedures.
Coordinate with Area Directors and Director.

Head Lifeguard

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 21 years of age.
Current Water Safety Instructor Certificate or Life Saving Certification from the American Red Cross or an organization having equivalent standard for minimum 2 years.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.
At least two years experience as a lifeguard.
One year of college education or the equivalent in experience significant for camping.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct all swimming pool activities.
Initiate a strict water safety program in keeping with the American Camp Association Standards, Red Cross requirements, and Metro Health Dept. codes.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Test and classify the swimming abilities of the camp staff and campers.
Supervise camp staff in carrying out instructions and lifeguard duties during swim periods.
Serve as resource person for all pool games.
Supervise the operation of the swimming pool and bath house.  This includes, but is not limited to the water purity, the cleanliness of the bath house and grounds, and all pool equipment.
Work with other leaders in scheduling all waterfront activities.
Be available when pool is closed due to lightning or for repairs.

Lifeguard

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 18 years of age.
Current Lifeguard Training Certificate from the American Red Cross, or an organization having equivalent standards.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Head Lifeguard

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Head Lifeguard in supervising all swimming pool activities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assume duties and responsibilities assigned by Head Lifeguard.
Lifeguard during camp, aftercare, and/or private parties.
Maintain and care for swimming pool, filters, chemicals, bath houses,grounds, equipment, etc.
Help with activities when pool is closed.

Arts & Crafts Director

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 21 years of age.
Interest, knowledge and skill in the field of arts and crafts and the ability to teach and enthuse campers.
Ability to work with children and adults to enable them to express themselves through the medium of arts and crafts.
One year of college education or the equivalent in experience significant for camping.
Documented training and/or certification in some form of artistic medium.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize and administer a safe, meaningful, and effective arts and crafts program.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and operate a meaningful arts and crafts program geared to the ages, interests, and abilities of the campers.
Coordinate this program with the other camp activities and plans.
Organize the arts and crafts program in such a way as to utilize the group counselors and junior counselors.
Supervise all staff people who come to the crafts room with their group.
Be responsible for the tools, equipment, and supplies in the arts and crafts room.

Horseback Director

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 21 years of age.
Certification as an instructor or 5 years formal training in horseback riding, preferably Hunter/Jumper English.
Experience supervising a riding facility (minimum 6 weeks).
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee riding program for Oak Hill Day Camp.
Oversee and maintain care of barn and horses.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach basic riding to campers.
Teach basic care and grooming of horses.
Oversee schedules for Barn Staff.
Keep all equipment in good working order.
Oversee the care and feeding of horses.
Maintaining appropriate supplies.
Make sure that all safety standards are met at all times.

Groom

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 17 years of age.
Minimum 3 years riding experience.
Experience in all areas of horse care.
Ability to follow instructions from supervisor.
Knowledge and practice of safety procedures.
Interest and having the skills for assisting in teaching all ages of children.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED preferred.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Horseback Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize and administer a safe and meaningful program in horseback riding.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the Horseback Director and other grooms in the total riding program.
Consistently follow all safety procedures.
Follow the instructions of the Horseback Director.
Help in teaching other counselors how to assist with horseback riding, as needed.
Maintain barn, tack, and riding area.
Teach appropriate skills to each camper as needed.
Assist Barn Director with care of horses.

Special Needs Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 18 years of age.
Some experience in camping, Scouts or other areas “significant” for camping.
General knowledge of recreational and outdoor activities.
Preference will be given to those with experience working with children with special needs.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED preferred.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
CampDirector and/or Asst. Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist child in participation of camp activities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the child you are assigned and help him or her to adjust and grow in their relationships with others.
Interpret and put into practice all safety and health regulations.
Report to office for required medications, if applicable.
Participate with campers in all activities both physical and creative.

Senior Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 18 years of age.
Some experience in camping, Scouts or other areas “significant” for camping.
General knowledge of recreational and outdoor activities.
Experience working with children.
Current CPR/First Aid Certified/AED preferred.
A mature Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Camp Director and/or Asst. Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and guidance of a small group of campers (not to exceed 16).

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with your group and help each camper adjust and grow in their relationships with others.
Interpret and put into practice all safety and health regulations.
Guide the individual camper in participating in group activities as well as all camp activities.
Take an accurate attendance count every day and turn into the Asst. Director.
Report all sickness or injury of campers to the office.
Complete all necessary forms and reports and submit to office as requested.
Develop a Bible devotional.
Participate with campers in all activities both physical and creative.

Junior Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Rising 11th and 12th graders.
Minimum of two years as a Counselor in Training.
A growing Christian.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Camp Director and/or Asst. Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist as needed in groups.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Stay with your assigned group.
Take campers to the bathroom or office/first aid station.
Assist with moving campers from one activity to the next. Will never be left as only counselor to the group.
Participate with campers in all activities both physical and creative.

Counselor In Training

QUALIFICATIONS:
Rising 9th and 10th graders.
A desire to follow Christ.
Approval from Parents.
Must be able to supply registration.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Camp Director and/or Asst. Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist staff in any area.
Never left alone with a camper or a group of campers.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Stay in assigned area.
Maintain snack area.
Keep Recreation Room clean.
Other responsibilities regarding equipment as designated by the Camp Director.
Help maintain the cleanliness of camp grounds.
